DISCOUNT METRO CARDS FOR THE POOR

DISCOUNT METRO CARDS FOR THE POOR

Amazing news for New Yorkers: Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) have agreed to test the Fair Fares program. Starting January 2019, the program will run for six months. It will offer discounted metro cards to those living under the federal poverty line–individuals making under $12,000 a year and families of four or more making under $24,399 (approximately 800,000 New Yorkers).

For those approved, single rides will be $1.35 and unlimited cards half price. Applicants will save $726 a year. This is great work by the Mayor and MTA and perhaps a massively influential move for the capital of liberal America. For more on the Fair Fares program read here.
