HARM OF NOT CONNECTING WITH OUR SAFE SPACES

Now connected to the little computers we carry in our pockets, are our smart homes. Your light switch and TV are controlled by ones trading data essentially. It can get costly although it feels invisible. It’s worth noting that data centers used by Big Tech are gargantuan warehouses of circuitry, cables, and cooling system, and that these are surprisingly concentrated in one area of the world. Little known though it is, Loudoun County in Virginia is the home of data centers of about 3,000 tech companies: it is estimated that 70% of the world’s online traffic passes through this cheap-energy area near Washington D.C. (Just this week, news broke that Amazon may choose Northern Virginia–an area encompassing Loudoun–as the site of one of its two new headquarters).
