A LOOK INSIDE STARBUCKS' ANTI-BIAS COURSE
Everyone should remember last month’s awful Starbucks incident. Where the overly aggressive and ostensibly racist manager of a Philadelphia location wrongfully called the cops on two black men, leading to their false arrest. Starbucks immediately apologized to the men, settled their suit with a promise to fund a $200,000 young entrepreneur’s program and called for the single day closing of 8,000 locations for the purpose of anti-bias training.
That day has arrived. Starbucks employees will partake in a 4-hour sensitivity training session, which will include exploratory discussions, a recorded message from rapper/actor Common and a lesson on civil rights (from the 1960’s until now). Major retail corporations like Walmart, Target and Nordstrom have followed suit. According to Starbucks brass, the purpose of this course is to identify and erode “implicit bias,”conscious and unconscious. “The work that we want to do is not say you’re a bad person because you have a stereotype about a group, but say this is why your brain may have these stereotypes,” she said.
