FALSE FITNESS TRENDS YOU'VE HEARD

Trainers and fitness advertisements portray false hope saying certain things like “incredible abs in 30 days”.  It is time that we start calling bullshit on some of these ads, trainers, routines, diets.

Intermittent Fasting

We normally are used to seeing or hearing is that we have to starve ourselves just to lose weight. Some people also think that they have to take long breaks from eating and it will help them lose weight. After you are done fasting, the weight may return. Your body may adjust to not eating too much for that period of time when you are fasting but when it is over, your body will go back to the original eating habits and may become hungrier, causing you to eat more than you need. Fasting for a long time is not healthy because your body needs the nutrients that food provides. Intermittent fasting may work, as you can eat for certain hours of the day and not at all other hours. For example, you can eat from 12 pm until 8 pm. But from 8:01 pm to 11:59 am, you can not eat at all or very little.


Dieting

The way to actually be in peak shape is to have a well-rounded diet. Eat your proteins, your starch, and salads. A lot of people just eating just salads, or just going vegan/vegetarians to lose weight. The human body needs the fatty foods to produce energy. You need to consume a certain amount of calories to keep your body functioning properly. The key is that you can watch your intake and also be more mindful of the portioning of your meals. Do not plan on working out on an empty stomach. When are you trying to burn calories/workout on an empty stomach, your body will look to convert energy from different places such as your muscles which can reduce your muscles. Energy usually comes from fat and glycogen stores. 

30 min workout is what works

Actually, if you want to be in tip-top shape, you have to change your entire lifestyle. Transformation of your body does not just happen overnight and it does not happen within 30 mins or 30 days. It may happen in 30 days if you are consistent with your new lifestyle. There were times when I saw changes in my body because I was constantly being active. That does not mean you only have to go to the gym and just workout to change your body. Your habits have to change as well. You have to always be active. I was not only working out, but also playing basketball, jogging, taking long walks, drinking more water and also watching the amount of food I ate during one sitting. Cutting my meals in half would help. Eating my meals out of a bowl as opposed to actually eating off a big plate also helped me. I still had my all-around meals, didn’t go on some weird diet to starve myself.

The Gym is the Be All, End All

You don’t have to isolate yourself to just going to the gym to obtain your fitness goals. Sometimes, the gym is not for everyone. The equipment may not be exactly what we need. Expand your workout. Go out for a jog or find a hobby to keep yourself active. The gym may be too packed, you may not want a lot of people watching you when you work out, maybe too many people use the same machine you want to use and you do not want to wait for them to be dome or lastly the fact it is so many people on that one machine, it disturbs your routine. Some people, like myself, like to stick on one machine and do multiple reps. But you may have some people waiting to use the same machine. This makes your workout difficult to finish up.

Should I be Sore?

Not being sore does not mean you did not have a good workout. To avoid soreness and injury, it is best to stretch. Stay hydrated, do not stress your muscles if you can not go anymore. It is important to give your muscles the proper rest to recover from the previous workout. Your muscles adjust to the stress you put on them over time so soreness does not mean you did not have an effective workout.

The Right Time to Exercise

The best time to work out is in the morning before you start your day? Not necessarily true…for everyone. Exercise should be when you have to time our busy schedules. It is ideal to have a daily routine, regardless the time of day. Keeping in mind, the importance of rest. If you want to get up early to workout, do it. If you want to workout after work, do it. Consistency is key.
