WHY IS THIS LICENSED GUN CARRIER IN JAIL, PREGNANT?
How do a mother, seasoned activist and a licensed gun carrier end up in jail for a firearm felony…pregnant? That’s a query for which the family and legal team of African-American Michigan native Siwatu-Salama Ra are doggedly trying to acquire an answer.
Last summer, Ra got into an altercation with a woman she claims tried to run her and her mother over with a car. She tells that to thwart the woman’s vehicular threat, she pointed her gun at the woman, eventually scaring her off. Not only was Ra’s gun licensed (she has a concealed carrier’s permit) and unloaded, but Michigan is a Stand Your Ground state.
Now the pregnant 26-year-old sits in the overcrowded Huron Valley Correctional Facility, the only prison for the woman in Michigan, facing a two-year sentence while receiving insufficient medical care. And it makes little sense. Or does it? After all, we’re talking about a black female activist whose name is Siwatu-Salama.
