USING ART TO HEAL FROM TRAUMA

USING ART TO HEAL FROM TRAUMA

There is a multitude of ways for people to cope with and even heal from traumatic experiences. There are options like psychotherapy or medication, both of which require the aid and guidance of a licensed primary care physician. But what are some ways in which we can help ourselves improve health when dealing with a diagnosis like Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)? Some experts point toward the arts.

Using artistic expression as an outlet and cathartic tool is recommended to those who are still dealing with the memory or forgotten memory of a tragic memory. Sufferers may not have the words to express their pain verbally. They’re encouraged to try non-verbal art forms to communicate–dance or sculpt or paint. In fact,  drawing and painting have long been a fruitful outlet for children dealing with trauma. A child may not have the articulation to convey such deep and dark foreign feelings. But they can speak as articulate as ever with a crayon, pencil or paintbrush.

An example of art helping the healing process is told by writer Terry Sullivan, who dealt with his own trauma and found his healthier self in the act of drawing. Check it out and ask yourself: Which form of art can be my conduit towards internal healing?
