NET NEUTRALITY & PRESS
It’s official, as of June 11th, 2018, the FCC has repealed net neutrality. Before this repeal went into effect, net neutrality has been a major topic in the news which caused a lot of people anxiety. Many businesses were fighting to keep net neutrality the way that it was because it was better for business and profit, but unfortunately, it didn’t end up that way.
For those of you who don’t know what net neutrality is, here is the simplest definition that I could find. According to Google’s dictionary, net neutrality is the “principle that Internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source, and without favoring or blocking particular products or websites.” This means that FCC has the power to monitor what people can view, research, and write about online. It also means that companies have the right to speed up or slow down its service on certain platforms. So basically, since Trump stated that he only targets the media and calls it fake news because he doesn’t like the mean things that are said about him, that can be easily changed or blocked on a website. It’s frustrating because the internet is supposed to be the place to research and post freely, why would anyone want to be an end to that? And does that mean for journalists?
A lot of journalists, bloggers, writers and media outlets have used the internet as a platform to express themselves, write articles and stories with facts whether its mean or not, and to connect with others, so why should any of that be monitored now? Doesn’t that affect our first amendment right to freedom of speech? It’s honestly not fair for this rule to go into effect now, especially since this is the age of technology, where social media use is at an all-time high, and that’s how most if not all people receive their news from. This repeal can cause a lot of stressors for many people who use their the internet as a form of living and financial support.
For instance, say there is a couple who has made a living from posting funny and entertaining content on Youtube for years and then one day that income stops coming in because of net neutrality, what happens to them because they are no longer receiving that income? Having to be monitored or having it taken away from you can really take a toll on your health; mentally, physically, and emotionally. No one should have to worry about where their next form of payment will come from as well as their next meal because the president doesn’t like the mean things that are being said about him and because the Republican party stands behind any brainless thing that he says. The whole situation is beyond fucked up and it honestly needs to go back to the way it was under the Obama administration.
Hopefully, then there will be another fight to appeal this repeal and that a way that can change the mind of FCC’s president Ajit Pai’s mind.
