JUNOT DIAZ EXPOSES HIS PAIN TO AID OURS
“Trauma is a time traveler”
These words ring from the recent and extremely personal New Yorker essay by Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Junot Diaz. In this achingly good read, Diaz reveals his childhood tragedy and trauma. He spends most of the piece taking readers on a time travel of how he spent most of his life running from his demons; ruining romantic relationships, his childhood, his marriage etc. While it’s an educated guess to say publicizing this was cathartic for Diaz, his intent appears more focused on the health of his readers.
We all live with some form of pain–whether psychological or physical. Too many of us opt to run from or medicate their pain as a form of survival. Diaz says it’s impossible to do either and the attempt merely spreads the pain to other areas. Wellvyl feels this piece is nutritious for two major reasons:
- It can help you look whatever pain you are currently dealing with in the mirror and figure out a healthy way to cope and dissolve.
- It will grant you more awareness of the issues the people around you (family, friends, coworkers etc) and the issues they may carry on a daily basis. This awareness will hopefully grant you sensitivity and empathy–for them as well as yourself.
We hope you agree and are better for having read this.
