HOW TO MAKE FRIENDS IN A NEW CITY
Moving to a new place is scary. And once you get there it is hard to make friends and gain community. Here is a list of social hacks to help you make friends in your new city.
1 – Let People Know You Are New in Town
Don’t be afraid to let people you encounter on a daily basis know that you are new to town. Make a point of asking for recommendations, and be open to suggestions. Letting people know that you are new, people will go out of their way to help you find people and places to go.
2 – Turn Your Solitary Pursuits into Group Outings
It is easy to just out alone to explore your new town. But to change that, invite others that you meet to do these things with you. If you like reading, go to the bookstore with someone. If you like to workout, then make it a group workout.
3 – Volunteering is a Great Way to Meet People
Volunteering is the perfect way to get acclimated to a new city. You’ll feel good donating your time and you’ll get to meet people as a bonus. Sites like Volunteer Match, Serve.gov, and Get Involved, can help connect you with organizations who need volunteers in your area.
4 – Join a Business Group
If you are a workaholic like myself, this could be the perfect way for you to meet friends in your new city. Sites like Linked In and Yahoo offer several online forums that can help expand networking opportunities. You could become friends with someone through one of the online discussions and then meet in person later.
5 – Be open to meeting new friends!
With any of these activities, be sure to smile and remain open to meeting someone new. Avoid making body language mistakes like staring too much so people will feel comfortable walking up and talking to you. Always give people you meet the best impression you can.
