COLLEGE ENROLLED AND HOMELESS?
A recent study reports that over a third of American college students are suffering from hunger and housing insecurity. That means financial strains have these teens and young adults dealing, on a daily basis, with a lack of food and/or the fear of being without shelter. 9% of these students are flat out homeless.
The report surveyed 43,000 voluntary students from 66 institutions—31 of them community colleges; 35 universities—in 20 states (+ Washington, D.C.).
If we’ve learned anything from past studies of children’s classroom performance, it’s clear that a lack of breakfast and stressful home life affects a child’s output in school. So imagine the stress of not knowing where your next meal or place to get a good night’s sleep lies. Read more on this survey at NPR.
