A BIGGER PROBLEM THAN ROSEANNE

By now, everyone should be aware of Roseanne Barr’s latest F-Up. If not, a quick briefing: Last Tuesday, Barr tweeted if “muslim brotherhood & planet of the apes had a baby = vj.” The baby in that equation referred to Valerie Jarrett, President Barack Obama’s former senior adviser. Jarrett is African-American. It’s 2018 and cops are still senselessly taking the lives of black men and boys without punishment; white folks are still comparing black people to monkeys.

While ABC swiftly canceled the second season of the “Roseanne” reboot, it didn’t take action until Barr’s agency ICM dropped her and comedian Wand Sykes, a consulting producer on the show quit. Jarrett’s response to Barr’s backlash was a graceful, yet strong “This should be a teaching moment.” In a recent New York Times opinion piece, written by Purdue University professor and author Roxane Gay, an urgent question is asked to us all:

“How many teaching moments [do] we need for white people to no longer feel entitled to comment on or police black bodies. And how much longer will we choose to consume pop culture that encourages such policing, either implicitly or explicitly?”
