We repost the right causes. We craft thoughtful captions. We weigh in on conversations about mental health, injustice, and trauma\u2014with the right hashtags in place. And while there\u2019s nothing inherently wrong with any of that, it begs a deeper question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n


What happens after we close the app?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


Are we checking in on the friends who\u2019ve gone quiet? Are we giving grace to people whose struggle doesn\u2019t come with an Instagram-ready backstory? Are we extending empathy in real life, or just curating the image of it online?

Empathy Takes Time\u2014And We\u2019re Out of It<\/strong>
One reason empathy feels endangered is because it doesn\u2019t fit the pace of modern life. Empathy slows things down. It asks us to pause, ask questions, and stay present in the discomfort of someone else\u2019s reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


But we live in a culture obsessed with speed. We reward hot takes over careful thought. We value certainty over curiosity. And our bandwidth\u2014for others and ourselves\u2014is constantly maxed out.
In other words: empathy requires presence. But our attention is elsewhere.

So, Where Do We Go From Here?<\/strong>
If this all sounds bleak, take a breath. There\u2019s a silver lining. Empathy is a skill. Which means it can be rebuilt<\/em>. We don\u2019t need to fix the world overnight. But we can<\/em> start by being intentional in small, consistent ways:<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Be curious before being critical.<\/strong> Assume there\u2019s more to someone\u2019s behavior than you can see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Hold space.<\/strong> You don\u2019t have to solve someone\u2019s problems to make them feel seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Check in.<\/strong> Not just when it\u2019s convenient. Especially when it\u2019s not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Stay in the conversation.<\/strong> Even when it\u2019s uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Empathy isn\u2019t soft. It\u2019s not weak. It\u2019s not a luxury. It\u2019s a muscle\u2014and we need to start working it again. Because in a world that\u2019s increasingly loud, fast, and fractured, empathy is one of the few things that can still bring us back to each other.
