It\u2019s likely that you will constantly feel unfulfilled if you are always thinking about the things you didn\u2019t do and the ways you should be improving yourself. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>What is \u201copposite action\u201d?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Moreover, if you start to dwell on what you haven\u2019t been able to accomplish with respect to self-improvement, it can inhibit you from taking the action that you desire. \u00a0In order to avoid this harmful cycle, \u201cpsychologists\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recommend\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a skill called \u2018opposite action,\u2019 which takes you\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">out<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0of the realm of thought and into the realm of action by initiating the opposite behavior of your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/julesschroeder\/2018\/01\/30\/millennials-heres-why-you-are-addicted-to-self-improvement\/#24a747fe3008\">thoughts<\/a>.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Instead of feeling paralyzed and going back and forth in your mind about what you did not do, opposite action dictates that you act to resolve the conflict in your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/mindful-musings\/201703\/feeling-urge-and-then-doing-opposite-action\">mind<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b>Putting \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/mindful-musings\/201703\/feeling-urge-and-then-doing-opposite-action\">Opposite Action<\/a>\u201d into action<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">An opposite Action is a useful tool for getting over that feeling of disappointment in yourself for not acting towards self-improvement. \u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Psychology Today<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> provides a step by step guide to help you in applying the opposite action in situations when you find yourself battling with your thoughts:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Identify and name the emotion that you are experiencing. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Determine whether the emotion is warranted given the circumstances of your situation. (You can also ask yourself whether acting on the urge will be effective in the long-term.) To clarify, the urge could be a strong desire to not do anything at all. \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Then, based on your answers, decide whether to act on their urge or to do an action that is opposite to the urge.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Opposite Action is the opposite of easy<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">One of the purposes of opposite action is to help prevent \u201cavoidance\u201d behaviors, like when you get so caught up in your thoughts that such thoughts begin to control and paralyze you, rather than the other way around. \u00a0If you are avoiding doing something that you believe will lead to self-improvement, it actually helps to do the thing you are avoiding.
