It\u2019s typically easy to tell whether a food product is derived from an animal. \u00a0\u00a0Shawn <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Baker, who is nicknamed the \u201cCarnivore King\u201d says the diet is easy because he doesn\u2019t have to plan meals or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/lifeandstyle\/2018\/may\/11\/the-carnivore-diet-all-meat-health-benefits-dangers\">count calories<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Baker is one of the more well-known proponents of the Carnivore Diet and has accumulated a large following on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/shawnbaker1967\/?hl=en\">social media<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>The Disadvantages<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Most of us are taught from a very young age that it\u2019s healthy to eat fruits and vegetables because they are high in nutrients. \u00a0According to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.self.com\/contributor\/abby-langer-rd\"> Abby Langer<\/a>,\u00a0Registered Dietician, \u201cwe don&#8217;t need plants to exist, but their phytochemicals, nutrients, and fiber are beneficial to our health.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Also, it seems like Carnivore followers are free to consume <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">processed meat products such as bacon and sausage \u2013 although not all Carnivore dieters adhere to this. \u00a0On an ethical note, this diet is kind of the complete opposite of veganism. If you\u2019re into avoiding meat because you\u2019re against the exploitation of animals \u2013 then this diet is definitely not for you regardless of its potential health benefits. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>So, is it just a fad?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When I first heard about the carnivore diet, it made me think of another diet that was popular with adults when I was a kid \u2013 the Atkins Diet. However, a quick internet search showed me that the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Atkins Diet<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevinstock.io\/health\/atkins-diet-vs-the-carnivore-diet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Carnivore Diet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0are not the same. Under the Atkins Diet, no food groups are completely eliminated except junk food. While Atkins recommends avoiding refined carbohydrates, you can still eat fruit, vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and dairy on Atkins.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But if you\u2019re following the Carnivore Diet, you strictly avoid the consumption of vegetables, fruit, grains, legumes, nuts, seeds, or any <a href=\"https:\/\/www.self.com\/story\/im-a-registered-dietitian-and-i-really-dont-want-you-to-eat-a-carnivore-diet\">starches<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And unlike the recently popular Keto Diet that limits carbohydrates, this diet involves zero carbs.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.metro.us\/body-and-mind\/health\/carnivore-diet-results-food-list-healthy\">Carnivore Diet<\/a> is intended to be a healthy way of living unlike a short-term diet aimed at helping the dieter lose weight. Changing the way you eat is a big decision that affects many facets of your life. \u00a0Just like any diet that restricts your intake of particular food items, you may feel limited in certain social situations when your friends want to share a meal together.
