{"id":60293,"date":"2018-06-24T13:24:25","date_gmt":"2018-06-24T17:24:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wellvyl.com\/?p=60293"},"modified":"2020-06-09T07:56:20","modified_gmt":"2020-06-09T07:56:20","slug":"meditation-commitment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wellvyl.com\/media\/meditation-commitment\/","title":{"rendered":"MEDITATION &amp;amp;amp;amp;amp; COMMITMENT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Why aren\u2019t you meditating?!?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Have you tried Headspace? \u00a0I have, with \u201ctried\u201d being the keyword. \u00a0It\u2019s a meditation and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.headspace.com\">mindfulness app<\/a> with the slogan \u201cMediation made simple\u201d prominently displayed on its website.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0Seems like an oxymoron. \u00a0I\u2019ve tried incorporating meditation into my life many times and I still haven\u2019t stuck to any regular routine, including the app, because the practice has never come easy, or \u201csimple\u201d to me. \u00a0The Headspace app offers a ten-day trial period with daily, customizable guided meditation sessions lasting as short as three minutes, or as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">long<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as ten minutes (it\u2019s funny and sad how New Yorkers would probably agree that setting aside ten minutes means setting aside too much time from our chaotic day). \u00a0After day three, I was no longer committed and for whatever reason, couldn\u2019t set aside even THREE MINUTES to meditate. And then I felt guilty each time I would get a Headspace notification on my phone to meditate, and then guiltier when I would push the notification aside and ignore it. \u00a0I even signed up to receive free mindful quotes each day from the app, which I also typically and shamefully ignore. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Meditation apps have become more common over recent years. \u00a0Apps such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.calm.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Calm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stopbreathethink.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Stop, Breathe &amp; Think<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.omvana.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Omvana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aurahealth.io\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Aura<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/insighttimer.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Insight Timer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0each include some sort of medication package and make enchanting promises to help you sleep better, manage stress, improve focus at work and in some cases, increase compassion if you can just put aside <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a few minutes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> of your time each day AT NO COST. \u00a0What New Yorker doesn\u2019t need more sleep, less anxiety and better attention to detail at work? \u00a0These apps are making meditation more accessible than ever before to every New Yorker with a smartphone. \u00a0Then why isn\u2019t every New Yorker with a smartphone meditating, for free, for a few minutes each morning!? It\u2019s because committing to a meditation practice is far from simple. \u00a0I know I\u2019m not the only one who has experienced difficulty with meditation. Although meditation apps are trying to help people like me become more accustomed to practicing meditation in a manageable way, I still haven\u2019t been able to make a commitment. \u00a0When I asked my friend, who recommended Headspace to me, whether she went through the entire 10-day trial period, she said she stopped at day 8 or day 9 because she was just too busy. She did much better than I did but still couldn\u2019t finish the ten-day trial. \u00a0I totally get it! <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">British psychoanalytic psychotherapist, Nigel Wellings actually wrote a book aimed at those who understand the value of meditation but just can\u2019t keep it up, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1101983272?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creativeASIN=1101983272&amp;linkCode=xm2&amp;tag=slatmaga-20\">Why Can&#8217;t I Meditate?<\/a>: How to Get Your Mindfulness Practice on Track.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0According to the book\u2019s description on Amazon, it\u2019s meant to provide an accessible guide to those having a difficulty continuing a meditation practice, or reluctantly stopped practicing, to get their mindfulness practice back on track. \u00a0However, if you\u2019re having trouble committing to three minutes a day, I realize that it\u2019s unlikely you\u2019ll commit to reading an entire book devoted to the topic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Read more stories on meditation <a href=\"https:\/\/wellvyl.com\/walking-meditation-new-yorkers\/\">here<\/a>.<\/em> <br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/credit-n.ru\/zaymyi-next.html\">http:\/\/credit-n.ru\/zaymyi-next.html<\/a> <br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/credit-n.ru\/zaymyi-next.html\">http:\/\/credit-n.ru\/zaymyi-next.html<\/a> <br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/credit-n.ru\/zaymyi-next.html\">http:\/\/credit-n.ru\/zaymyi-next.html<\/a> <br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/credit-n.ru\/zaymyi-next.html\">http:\/\/credit-n.ru\/zaymyi-next.html<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Why aren\u2019t you meditating?!?
