{"id":58431,"date":"2018-05-21T13:21:58","date_gmt":"2018-05-21T17:21:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wellvyl.com\/?p=58431"},"modified":"2023-04-01T04:59:48","modified_gmt":"2023-04-01T04:59:48","slug":"wtf-is-gluten-free","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wellvyl.com\/media\/wtf-is-gluten-free\/","title":{"rendered":"WTF IS GLUTEN-FREE?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last week, when I was talking to my gym buddy as we pushed forward on the elliptical, she told me that at 28-years-old, she underwent allergy testing for the first time. \u00a0Her tests revealed that she had a gluten sensitivity. So, as any rational 28-year-old would do, she eliminated gluten from her diet and became \u201cgluten-free.\u201d She said she has felt better ever since.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, the news she shared with me made me wonder, could I be sensitive to gluten too? \u00a0I never got tested for allergies when I was younger. If I were sensitive to gluten, and I stopped consuming gluten, would all my life\u2019s problems disappear!? But I remembered that my health plan requires me to get a referral in order to see a specialist, so instead, I resorted to the internet, as I typically do for my medical concerns (I know\u2026I need to stop doing that!). \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I started looking into which products I should avoid if I want to cut out gluten. \u00a0The answer turned out to be more complicated than I had envisioned. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products marked as gluten-free may not be so accurate in their labeling. \u00a0A <a href=\"http:\/\/bgr.com\/2018\/04\/11\/gluten-free-health-trend-study-research\/\">new study<\/a> shows that most \u201cgluten-free\u201d foods are not actually gluten-free<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Even more troubling, the amount of gluten consumed by people on supposedly gluten-free diets can easily exceed the amount that would cause issues for someone who actually suffers from a gluten-related disorder.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re trying to eliminate gluten, for whatever reason, medical or otherwise, here are the top five pieces of information you should know about \u201cgluten-free\u201d products:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>There are many foods that are naturally gluten-free! \u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foods like beans, fresh eggs, fresh meat, poultry or fish (that has not been breaded, batter-coated or marinated), fruits and vegetables, and most dairy products do not contain gluten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Products labeled \u201cwheat-free\u201d may still contain gluten.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b><\/b><b>Gluten also may be found in certain unsuspecting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/blog\/going-gluten-free-just-because-heres-what-you-need-to-know-201302205916\">products<\/a>.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Products such as frozen vegetables in sauces, soy sauce, some foods made with \u201cnatural flavorings,\u201d vitamin and mineral supplements, some medications, and even toothpaste may contain gluten.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>It\u2019s important to watch out for <a href=\"https:\/\/newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org\/discussion\/gluten-free-diet-basics\/\">cross-contamination<\/a>.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This occurs when gluten-free products come in contact with foods that contain gluten. It can happen during the manufacturing process, in a restaurant, or while cooking in your apartment. One major source of cross-contamination occurs when using a common toaster for gluten-free bread and regular bread.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The US Food and Drug Administration has defined <a href=\"https:\/\/celiac.org\/blog\/2014\/08\/fda-gluten-free-food-labeling-information-page\/#BUjTe9ElHZwGj7Vl.99\">gluten-free<\/a>.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a manufacturer chooses to put \u201cgluten-free\u201d on food packaging, the item must comply with the FDA definition of the term \u2013 this means the product contains less than 20 parts per million (ppm) of gluten. Some research indicates that even individuals that suffer from celiac disease (where the ingestion of gluten leads to damage in the small intestine) tolerate foods with less than 20 ppm of gluten.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since I wasn\u2019t receiving any indication of a gluten sensitivity, I decided to keep gluten in my diet for now. \u00a0However, if you are planning a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/lifestyles\/health\/sns-201611291400--tms--premhnstr--k-a20161130-20161130-story.html\"> gluten-free diet<\/a>, it\u2019s always a good idea to talk to a registered dietitian who is familiar with celiac disease. \u00a0A dietician can help you learn to recognize ingredients on nutrition labels that contain gluten and explain which products to avoid entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, when I was talking to my gym buddy as we pushed forward on the elliptical, she told me that at 28-years-old, she underwent allergy testing for the first time. \u00a0Her tests revealed that she had a gluten sensitivity.
