A common misconception is that black and minority people do not suffer from depression. Without a balance of mental stability, we cannot be healthy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the recent news of two men being discriminated against and escorted out of a Starbucks in handcuffs by police, it is still increasingly dangerous to be a black man. Worry is a constant threat to their living. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"https:\/\/wellvyl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pexels-photo-262277.jpeg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-58278 size-large\" title=\"minority man with depression\" src=\"https:\/\/wellvyl.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/pexels-photo-262277-1024x682.jpeg\" alt=\"black man with depression\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" \/><\/a><\/h2>\n<h2>Mental Illness and the Media<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last March, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/03\/22\/texas-serial-bomber-made-video-confession-before-blowing-himself-up-police.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">serial bomber plagued the Texas community<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set off 5 bombs. In the media, he is described as a mentally challenged young man. The narrative is almost sympathetic. He is a white person. If we look at these actions through a racial lens, he most likely would be deemed a terrorist if he had not been a white man. By the way, the victims of these heinous acts happened to be mostly black and Hispanic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In early April, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/04\/nyregion\/police-shooting-brooklyn-crown-heights.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York City Police shot and murdered Saheed Vassell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a mentally ill man in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. 911 calls show that people assumed the man was wielding a weapon and was fatally shot at the arrival of the police. He was not taken peacefully into custody which leaves the question, does race still matter?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Blacks and Mental Illness<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mentalhealthamerica.net\/african-american-mental-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Alliance on Mental Illness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Black people are no different when it comes to the prevalence of mental health conditions when compared to the rest of the population. However, your concerns or experiences and how you understand and cope with these conditions may be different. For example, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite progress made over the years, racism continues to have an impact on the mental health of Black\/African Americans.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why aren\u2019t people of color treated with the same care as white people when it comes to mental illness?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black women tend to be praised for being the most resilient and strongest people on this earth; however, these notions also limit the attention that black women may need in regards to mental health. In \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/black-women-are-allowed-to-have-depression-too#1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strong Black Women Are Allowed to Have Depression, Too<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d written by Rochaun Meadows-Fernandez, addressing this same sentiment. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black women deal with many unique societal factors that could affect mental health. As a Black woman who deals with anxiety and depression, I often feel \u201cweak\u201d due to my emotional fragility.\u201d Many people in the black community that are diagnosed with depression may feel this way due to the stigma and representation of mental illness. However, Rochaun continues, \u201cBut as I grow more in my understanding of mental health, I\u2019ve realized my struggle doesn\u2019t negate my strength.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can still have depression and be strong. If you need help with the issue, it is highly recommended to seek a doctor\u2019s help through talk therapy or counseling. Especially if you are a minority.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>A Safe Place for the Minority<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Safe Place\u201d app created by Jasmin Pierre is taking strides in educating those under psychological distress. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/afropunk.com\/2018\/03\/jasmin-pierre-built-minority-mental-health-app-black-community-safe-place\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AfroPunk article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Pierre states that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are also 20% more likely to experience serious mental health problems than the rest of the general population.\u201d This app is designed to cater to the minority community.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With recurring stories of minorities being murdered, mistreated, and discriminated against, it is important that we take the steps to live a more conscious life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being woke means, paying attention and treating our mental health.
