What many don&#8217;t know is exactly how raised temperatures affect the planet.<\/p>\n<p>One specific fear on the horizon is the increase of sea levels and harsher winters for continents dependent on the Atlantic Ocean. The culprit, according to a recent study in the journal Nature, is the slowing down of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC), a major system of water currents which carries warm water to the North Pole, exchanged for melted ice to be ferried back south. The issue is that a melting Arctic adds more water into the salt seas, disrupting the AMOC. This may not only lead to rising seas, but a winter worse than the one NYC just escaped.
