IS THERE A STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS FOR TWEETS?

I am sure you have heard about the Kevin Hart tweet and the Oscar host debacle. Hart was so close to having his professional dreams come true. He was asked to be the host of the Oscars. This was a huge deal for him and the continued effort for inclusivity in the film industry. However, the dream came to a halt. Embroiled in negativity, people began to bring up old 2009 tweets of Kevin saying homophobic slurs. These tweets have been brought to the surface a couple times since then and he has apologized. The Academy asked Kevin to make ANOTHER public apology and he refused. He politely stepped down. And now the Oscars are out of a host.

The question comes up again, was this racially motivated? Would a white comedian be held to the same standards for 10-year-old tweets?

This brings up another question, is there a statute of limitations on tweets? Should we hold tweets against people that were made 10 years ago? Kevin Hart’s point is.. I have changed and matured since then. Why should I continue to apologize numerous times for something I did so long ago?

Hart’s friend and comedian, Nick Cannon came to his defense and pulled up what we like to call, ‘receipts’ of tweets from white comedians to see if they would be treated the same way as Kevin. Needless to say, they were not. But I was happy to see Nick come to Kevin’s defense with facts and compassion.

What are your thoughts? Should Kevin Hart have to apologize for his homophobic tweets?
